Banishing spells and rituals, when done properly, can be a great way to get rid of negative energy or unwanted issues and problems.

Even witches and magic workers that are careful only to use the most positive of spells can still find themselves stuck with negative energy. This can be strictly energetic, such as unusual negative feelings, or it can manifest as money problems, a bad roommate, unwarranted legal issues, or unwanted spirits. Banishing spells are one of the best ways to encourage this energy to become positive or to leave the situation.

Is a Banishing Spell Black Magic?

Many people claim that all banishing rituals and spells are black magic. According to ReligiousTolerance.org, black magic is a term used to describe magic that is worked with negative intent or against the victim's free will. However, banishings can be done with only positive intent and no effect on anyone but the caster. Avoiding "negative" or "black" magic is also a personal choice - many paths do not forbid it, including some forms of Wicca. While there may be negative repercussions, the use of it is up to each practitioner to make a decision.

Banishing spells do not have the same implicit intent as a curse or hex. If the practitioner working the spell is careful, a banishing spell can be worded so it does not harm or attempt to control others. Using a phrase such as "this person/people must leave this neighborhood" can interfere with another person's free will. However, a phase like "may this person/problem stop causing negativity in my life" lets things unfold naturally, and can cause less repercussions.

Unexpected consequences may arise, as they always can when working magic, but these are not necessarily punishments. Things may work out differently than expected, especially when removing negativity. Two keys to keeping a spell's results on track are attention to detail and clarity. Specifying the method the negativity should be removed with makes the results less unpredictable.

Basic Components of a Banishing Spell

Although banishing spells vary greatly, most share some basic components. The first step is to clearly explain what the spell is attempting to banish. The more concise and limited the description the better - a spell for encouraging a messy roommate to move out is easier than a spell to banish all child abuse in the world. Clarity is especially important when the spell could affect you, such as a banishing to remove a roommate causing you to lose your home in the process.

A physical representation of the issue or problem is also helpful. This could be a photo, a drawing, or a simple object. Salt is a common material for this - energy can be focused on it, and it can be thrown out or dissolved as a symbolical removal of that energy. There are many herbs, spices, and other extras that can help with a banishing spell. More information on this can be found in a good book of correspondences, such as Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs.

Removing troublesome spirits or combating heavy harassment, such as stalking or threats, may require other sympathetic spells to cause a change. Freezing, binding, or mirroring spells could be appropriate in those causes, as well as proper shielding and wards protecting the home and person.

The Simplest Ways to Banish

Banishing doesn't require a complicated spell or full blown ritual to work. The simplest of banishing spells can still make a big change. Everyday Witch A to Z, by Deborah Blake, has a useful and easy banishing spell that doesn't require any special supplies. She recommends using a small slip of paper to write about the negative or unwanted issue you want resolved or removed from your life Then, after focusing on sending this negativity away, burn it using a candle or small fire.

The same basic spell could be done with a number of household items:

  • Table or Sea Salt - known to absorb energy in many traditions and religions, and easy to destroy;
  • A Drawing or Clay Figure representing the issue - makes it easier to focus on the exact problem, and;
  • Bread or Grains (oatmeal, cornmeal, etc) - These absorb energy and can be left outside as an offering to ask for nature/spirits to aid you.

Banishing Spells Can Take Time to Work

Like with all magic, results may not be immediate, or exactly what you expected. However, with the right precautions and awareness, it's possible to do a banishing without harming others or trying to control someone's will. Full banishing spells do require a good deal of magical knowledge and practice, but the simplest spells can be worked by beginners if care is taken to consider the intent and effect of the spell.
